Oh, the places you’ll go!

April 14, 2010 in Philosophy,Travel

I’m a little bit torn about traveling in Europe while I’m in Nice. On one hand, I want to completely immerse myself in the French Riviera and create a life there (read: I have to make limited funds stretch for six months). I want to spend my free time exploring the area around me: Cannes, Monaco, Menton, Corsica. And, of course, I’ll find a way to make it to Paris–if only to try and sneak in a meeting with my favorite expat bloggers, like @LostNCheeseland. On the other hand, being a mere train ride away from some of the hottest destinations in Europe is hard to pass up.

With that in mind, here’s my wishlist of places I’d like to hit up if I stumble across a few 100 Euro bills on the ground.

friends

1. Munich, Germany: I want to check “drinking a beer in a dirndl at Oktoberfest” off my bucket list. What better time to do that than during its 200th anniversary? Plus, having a friend who’s living in Munich means I can sleep on a free couch. It will be embracing my German heritage at its fullest.

2. Amsterdam, Netherlands: My favorite flower is the tulip and my favorite mode of transportation is the bicycle. So, from what I’ve heard, Amsterdam could easily become my favorite city. Rex, one of my best friends from high school with whom I traveled to Italy during the summer of 2006, might be studying in northern England- a ferry ride away from Amsterdam! If so, he’s agreed to ride bikes with me and I’ve agreed to accompany him to the red-light district (aka make sure he stumbles home safely).

3. Wherever Maria is living: I met Maria during the summer of 2007 while studying French at the Alliance Française in Paris. Maria is half-American, grew up in Norway and Belgium, spent her summers in Provence, did her undergrad studies in South Africa, went to grad school in London, and is searching for a job anywhere in the world. She is fluent in English, Norwegian and French, and yes, I’m a little obsessed. I visited her twice in London, and we always have fun together. If she’s working in Europe while I’m there, I fully plan on visiting (I’m crossing my fingers for somewhere in Scandinavia).

4. Croatia: My ex-boyfriend’s family was Croatian, and he was all about being the “Croatian Sensation.” I didn’t really get it. Then I saw pictures of Croatian beaches. Now I get it, and I’m dying to spend some time island cruising (especially after reading the account of hot Aussies on a boat via Twenty-Something Travel). Bonus: I’ve heard that it’s not quite as touristy (read: irrationally expensive) as the Greek islands, so now is the time to go.

5. Spain: I also made friends with a group of Spanish girls while studying in Paris. I absolutely loved hearing about their culture, eating their home-cooked meals at 10 p.m. and not starting our nights out until past midnight. One of my close friends studied abroad in Alicante, Spain last fall, and six months later, she’s still Spain-sick. Side reason: her host family had a pug named Lola that I kind of want to meet in person. While I don’t think I can hang with the Spanish nightlife–just making it to 2 a.m. closing time is a stretch for me–I still want to see the Barcelona beaches and the Madrid museums.

What do you think are the must-see destinations in Europe for a traveler on a budget? I’d love some input as I plan a few side trips.

I'm a little disappointed Italy is not on your list! I'll have to convince you to make your way to Florence for a tweet up. I definitely want to make my way to Croatia too . And Greece, Turkey, oh the list goes on…

  • camorose

Italy isn't there since I've already been there AND because it's so close, I'm kind of considering it part of my “exploring France” option. Believe me, talking me into a Florence tweet-up wouldn't be THAT hard :)

Christine, I have been to 4 out of 5 places on there (I can't say I have been where Maria is living). I am just finishing up a 12 part series on Spain and Portugal with pictures from Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, and Sevilla. And yes, Spain is a VERY late night culture!! Croatia really is beautiful. While it is true that there are some great beaches you MUST see Plitvice National Park (http://twitpic.com/1fl21e). As for beaches, there are SO many beaches and islands in Croatia, it's easy to find a quiet spot (Here's the island of Rab – http://twitpic.com/1fl2sp). For Amsterdam, there are plenty of places to see the flowers and tulips and it's a very neat city. Amsterdam has about as many canals as Venice. And you can definitely have all the beer you want in Munich!

    So there's my two cents.

It's part of France, but I absolutely love the small towns of the Pyrenees. Pau, Tarbes, Lourdes (the last just for the spectacle of all the religious pilgrims).

If you get a chance, you should make your way over there for a bit – especially in July when the Tour de France makes its way through!

  • camorose

WOW I love the Croatia pics! So beautiful. If I can figure out a way, I'll definitely check out all those cities–I'm glad that someone else has good things to say about them too. Thanks for weighing in!

  • camorose

I actually researched studying abroad in Pau–I would love to go and see what I missed out on in college! I've heard of Lourdes, so I think I'll have to go just to say I've seen it. Thanks for pointing those out to me. They definitely weren't on the top of my list, but I do think they would be a nice easy getaway.
I saw the Tour de France in Paris in 2007, but I think it would be cool to see it again in one of the smaller towns. I'll have to research dates and places!

Though I completely understand the draw of wanting to check Oktoberfest off the bucket list (having done so myself in 2006), and think that Oktoberfest is certainly an experience, Munich itself is one of my least favorite cities in Germany. There's just not that much to do there, other than eat, drink, and drink more. As long as that's what you're planning on, you should have a lovely time (especially if you're staying with a friend!).

Spain is fantastic, though — Madrid is absolutely worth going to for the Prado alone, and my friends and I had a fabulous time tapa-hopping (just like barhopping, but with the added bonus of tapas!), and I'm more than a little in love with all the Gaudí buildings in Barcelona. And Amsterdam is such a great city for its cafe culture (even aside from the coffee shops!) — I found one of my favorite breakfast places ever there.

I've been hearing really fabulous things about northwestern Slovenia and the Croatian coast from a friend whose budget is practically nil, and would adore to go to Turkey — as long as you find a Ryanair/EasyJet-type flight, it should be cheap once you're there.

I've just stumbled across your blog, which is lovely! Had no idea that this year is the 200th anniversary of Octoberfest…

I agree with most of your list, Croatia is definitely on my list of places to visit – and hopefully its not too touristy when I'm there in August.

A city I really loved when I was in Europe ages ago was Vienna. Its such a beautiful city, easy to walk around and the food! Schnitzel and Sacher torte…could almost eat that everyday. I've never visited in summer though but I've heard that it has a great culture with outdoor concerts and lots of beer gardens.

Steph's post about the sexy Aussies in Croatia convinced you to go too, eh? Hahaha. I LOVED Amsterdam! And I think I have a crush on your friend Maria.

  • camorose

We'll have to agree to disagree over Munich– I visited last summer and absolutely loved it! I had great weather and absolutely loved spending the day in Englischergarten. Plus, I grew up on Southern German food–so I couldn't get enough!
Spain is definitely high on my list, and I have no idea how I haven't already made it there! I've heard great things about tapas barhopping :)
Thanks for weighing in–Turkey is another one that I think needs to be on my list after so many recommendations.

  • camorose

Have fun in Croatia! If I haven't already made it there, I'd love to know what you think.
I visited Vienna this summer, and it was definitely a beautiful city. It was just so CLEAN after Berlin and Prague :) I love schnitzel, too–hard to pass that up!
    Glad you enjoyed the blog!

  • camorose

Steph's post about the sexy Aussies basically made me realize that I absolutely MUST go to Croatia. Maybe I'll have to convince Maria to come with me…

  • Katelyn

    :) <—- That's me smiling because you…
    a) mentioned Spain in your blog
    b) mentioned my great host family in your blog
    c) mentioned Lola in your blog

If you do make it to Spain, (crossing my fingers that you'll find a couple hundred euro on the ground) I know for a fact you can crash at my host parents's house! I'll also be extremely jealous and might have to secretly hate you for a while.

Love this post and you! I hope you make it to all of your dream destination. Oh, and if/when you make it to Croatia please promise me you'll go back…with me!

  • camorose

If I go to Alicante, I'm seriously going to get your host family's address and show up on their doorstep. Warn them that I'll be obsessed with Lola, and probably will laugh hysterically as soon as I see her.
I mean, if you win the lottery and want to take me on a Croatian cruise this summer, I'm totally down. If not, we will totally figure out a way to hit our dream destinations together :) Te amo xx

Iceland! Sometimes volcanoes erupt and melt glaciers and halt all travel to/from/within Europe, but eh, “nbd.” ;) Of course, I'll do my best to plan a trip out there while you're still in France and we'll take that trip together!

Glacier snowmobiling, climbing waterfalls, natural hot springs, partying all night and fantastic people…it's a wonderful, wonderful time!

Have a safe trip, I miss you already! <3

  • camorose

I wish Iceland wasn't so darn isolated aka with expensive flights! I would love to check out Iceland and meet all your fun friends after seeing all your amazing pictures :) Perhaps we'll see…

Hi Christine! I'm a friend of Kristina Wegscheider's and absolutely LOVE your blog. I'm hoping to go to Spain in the fall to teach English (I was abroad in Barcelona). Anyway, if you have the time you should try to make it to Portugal. Lisbon is fantastic, the people are really friendly, and the language is semi-similar to French.

  • camorose

So glad to hear that you like the blog and thanks for commenting! If you make it to Spain, we must meet up–I'm dying to go. I've heard great things about Portugal as well. I'm crossing my fingers I figure out a way to make it over there! Thanks for reminding me about it :)
