Postcard from Cockatoo Island

Sydney often seems too shiny and new to harbor any past secrets. However, a visit to Cockatoo Island is a sunshine-infused reminder of the city’s convict and industrial past. And not a bad place to have a beer with a view, either… A former imperial prison and once Sydney’s biggest shipyard, the prison buildings of […]

Outpost Project: the culture of Sydney street art

It’s no secret that I love Sydney, sunshine and street art. Throw all three together on a (kind of) deserted island, add in a bar and breakdancing, and you’ve got my perfect day. The Outpost Project is a rare chance to see a wide variety of street art in one location. The range of art […]

Every once in a while, however, an Australian takes pity on my car-less state and treats me to a road trip (like my Great Ocean Road […]

Postcard from Newtown

Taking advantage of cheap flights, I hopped up to Sydney a couple of weekends ago. I spent one gloriously sunny day exploring Newtown: a colorful and slightly off-beat suburb. I wandered through countless bookstores on King Street, searched for street art in alleyways and ate the most delicious African food for lunch. Winning.
