There are often moments when David and I turn to each other and say how happy we are to live in San Diego, and listening to a symphony al fresco as the sun set over the bay: that was definitely one of them. We went to the Tchaikovsky Spectacular with another couple last weekend, an outdoor classical concert complete with a firework show to end the San Diego Symphony’s summer-long Bayside Nights concert series.

I feel like people often write off San Diego as all surf beaches and taco shops, and so it’s always nice to enjoy a little culture. And look, although we were obviously spoiled with world-class culture and entertainment options in New York City…this was the first time that I was able to enjoy a concert of this caliber while enjoying a waterfront sunset. Another fun thing the San Diego Symphony does is play popular movies without the score, and then play the entire score live while the movie is projected: they did an outdoor version of Harry Potter and Star Wars this summer, and I’m already itching to get tickets for the Love Actually showing this winter!

Podcasts

Reply All has long been one of my favorite podcasts (even before I started working at Gimlet!), but I had two friends in completely different spheres of my life post about Long Distance Parts 1 & 2 last week which finally convinced my husband to listen to it. I later found him in the garage, rather sheepishly: “I don’t really have anything else to do out here, but I didn’t want to stop listening.” It’s an incredible episode, and if you need something to listen to this weekend: I highly recommend it.Boom Town by Sam AndersonBoom Town by Sam Anderson

Reads

My friend Erin lent me Boom Town: The Fantastical Saga of Oklahoma City, Its Chaotic Founding, Its Apocalyptic Weather, Its Purloined Basketball Team, and the Dream of Becoming a World-class Metropolis last weekend, and I am loving it so much more than I expected. I definitely have a soft spot for real-life sports sagas (my first real internship was copy editing at a newspaper’s sports section!) and sports movies, but this book manages to weave sports and Wild West American history and city planning and modern politics into an incredibly compelling narrative. It is also making me more interested than I ever thought I would be in visiting Oklahoma City! (Also, I have not stopped thinking and laughing about WHY NOT?!?!?! #whynot #whynot)

Christine Merrill at Hummingbird Cafe

Eats

For Christmas this year, David’s aunt and uncle gave us the most thoughtful gift: they researched San Diego blogs, found recommendations for the best acai bowl and breakfast burrito spots (that were also dog-friendly!) and gave us a write-up with reviews of the spots–and called the owners to set up credit waiting for us when we arrived! (In true laid-back So Cal form, no one seemed concerned with a physical gift card or whatnot.) We finallllllly cashed in on this gift and went to Lazy Hummingbird on Labor Day morning, and it was such a delightful treat: we explored a new neighborhood, indulged in acai bowls and dirty chai’s, and were so grateful that someone else treated! Very into the idea of “breakfast date” gifts moving forward. Similarly, I’ve been really into Open Table gift certificates for couples who get married and don’t have a registry: treat them to a memorable meal out, at the restaurant of their choosing! p.s. my top is Everlane and it’s a current weekend fave!

This weekend, I’m going to brunch and then Pawmaste (lolololol) with my girlfriend and her pug, and then mostly catching up on errands and reading and beach walks.
