One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!

Walden Pond Books in Oakland, CA

This week had a few unexpected bumps in it, to say the least. I had a pretty terrible stomachache on Monday and Tuesday that wouldn’t go away and I couldn’t quite pinpoint the cause. Late on Tuesday afternoon, I was googling symptoms of appendicitis and stomach ulcers: it was BAD. I got home and took Gertie out, and when we got up to our front door, she scrambled away from me (very cute pug, not the best listener) and I whipped around to try and grab here–and cracked my forehead on a sharp corner. Luckily, David had JUST gotten home from a run: he had poured himself a glass of water when I came in with blood pouring out of my head! He’s usually pretty queasy when it comes to blood, but he was an absolute star of a cutman and got me all cleaned up and bandaged. I ended up going to a dermatologist the next day where they put in some minor sutures and prescribed antibiotics to avoid infection–and now I am just crossing my fingers I don’t end up with a Harry Potter scar on my forehead! Although it could have been much worse, it was an intense experience that made me very grateful to have a partner AND health insurance.

Morcom Rose Garden in Oakland, California

Blooms

One of my favorite discoveries in Oakland was the Morcom Municipal Rose Garden. I noticed it on the map when we were wandering around the city, and decided that it couldn’t hurt to check it out. I stumbled across this tucked-away garden IN FULL BLOOM. It was so beautiful and smelled so incredible! Worth the extra hills I walked to to get there.

Podcasts

I’m an avowed lover of true crime podcasts, and this Rolling Stone article on why they’re so good gave me a few new ones to check out. I breezed through Accused, and I’m currently waiting for the next episode of ConvictedThe Shark Club book

Reads

Currently reading The Shark Club: it’s a pretty easy-going beach read with a little love story twist.

This weekend, we’re going to San Diego! I can’t wait to to catch up with some college friends, eat all of the tacos and get a good mix of city and beach time (especially when we stay here).
