Of the moment // 1.22.16

One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!

Ralph's Coffee in New York City

One of the things that I am so, so, so grateful for in New York City is the creative and entrepreneurial community that I’ve cultivated. Through work and play (and often Instagram), I’ve met so many talented and inspiring people–and I’ve been able to develop real and rewarding friendships with them. Making the time and space (aka sending those follow-up scheduling emails) for these relationships to grow is one of the things that I’m most proud of in my NYC life–and this week drove that point home for me. Catching up over coffee with a favorite travel photographer, a breakfast meeting of women in business, a yoga class and dinner with two of my editors-turned-actual-friends: I started every day excited and ended every night inspired.

Boll & Branch towelsFixed Life Envy: Bath

I’m a big believer in Sunday night clay face masks (this one is my long-time favorite), and I recently added in coconut oil hair masks to the routine. I love a good at-home spa treatment: having a deep soaking tub is one of my favorite elements of our new apartment. Side note: we’re loving these Boll & Branch towels: they’re super-soft organic cotton, and they’re actually Fair Trade certified!

Balthazar hot chocolate in SoHo

Sweet Tooth

Now that the cold weather has set in, it’s officially hot chocolate season: and one of my favorite places to calorie splurge is the Balthazar take-out window. Their hazelnut hot chocolate tastes exactly like melted Nutella: it’s the perfect thing to sip on while wandering around the shops and streets of SoHo.

Schoolhouse Electric brass ion light

Fixed Life Envy: Details

In things I’ve learned about my boyfriend since moving in together: he has some serious design opinions and preferences. Think more reclaimed wood than all-white everything (aka my dream). Full post on the the joys of design compromise coming soon! One fun thing is that he loves exposed filaments: it’s one of those things that I don’t dislike, but I’d never really considered as a “thing” before. We opted for this brass ion light from Schoolhouse Electric on both of our nightstands, and it is PERFECT. It gives off this really soft warm glow that is lovely for before-bed reading, and it doesn’t take up too much room. I might just learn a few design tips from him after all… Side note: I’ve been reading When Breath Becomes Air every night before bed this week, and it is just so moving.

Eats & Drinks

I go through phases of breakfasts (aka I eat nothing but oatmeal for six weeks, and then nothing but grapefruit for six weeks, etc etc), and right now, I am in a serious green smoothie phase (loosely based on this recipe). It’s super easy to chuck a bunch of stuff in the blender (aka bananas, spinach, coconut water, ginger, chia seeds, etc.) and either drink it right then OR put it in a mason jar and take it to work for a mid-morning snack. Any other morning smoothie recipes to recommend?

New York City

Words

“My dreams are worthless, my plans are dust, my goals are impossible. All are of no value unless they are followed by action.” -Og Mandino, The Greatest Salesman in the World

Tonight, we’re going to an improv show at UCB Theatre–my first time at UCB! A big blizzard is supposed to hit New York City tomorrow: cue hot chocolate (or maybe mulled wine?), The Good Wife, and lots of writing. Maybe even a snowy adventure in Prospect Park!
