How to: Productive Saturday

#ProductiveSaturday (as defined by my like-minded friend Kate and me): a Saturday in which you wake early and un-hungover in order to clean your apartment, run any household errands and go grocery shopping. To be fair: Kate and I also regularly wax nostalgic about believing in washing our floors on our hands and knees and often trade cleaning tips and tricks. DON’T WE SOUND LIKE FUN!  Modern apartment in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn When a productive Saturday is done right, you are free to enjoy the rest of your weekend by noon. And that is a glorious feeling, especially when Sunday night rolls around and you can comfortably and guiltlessly spend it on your couch.

Modern apartment in Bed-Stuy BrooklynFirst is that if you clean your apartment regularly, it doesn’t get dirty. Mind blowing, I know. But seriously! If you sweep the floors, wipe the countertops, scrub the bathtub, clean the toilet once a week: dirt and dust barely have the time to build up, and then you rarely have to do a serious deep clean (although I usually do one before and after we have Airbnb guests). I’m currently obsessed with Common Good cleaning products: they’re plant-based and biodegradable, they smell amazing (scents are derived from 100% essential oils) AND you can refill the containers all around Brooklyn.Modern apartment in Bed-Stuy BrooklynSecond, it’s an ideal time to swap out towels and change sheets for the week ahead. My favorite little luxury right now is to spritz clean sheets with lavender bergamot linen water: lavender is my favorite calming scent, and I feel like the scent helps me wind down every night. (Side note: I love having all-white sheets, but they definitely require more care to keep them bright white! Any hints?)

Third is that if you grocery shop on Saturday morning, you avoid those long lines and empty shelves that often plague Sunday night shopping. I also like to make sure I have all of the ingredients so that I can batch prepare Mason jar salads for work week lunches OR throw something in the crockpot on Sunday morning to enjoy for dinner that night (and maybe section off the leftovers for lunches).Modern apartment in Bed-Stuy BrooklynAnd last is that by getting rid of the niggling errands upfront in the weekend, you’re free to truly enjoy the rest of your weekend. I don’t love going out on Friday nights: I’d rather go to a yoga class after work and then go home and enjoy a glass of white wine rather than stay out super late and spend the rest of my weekend exhausted. But once productive Saturday [morning] is done, I can go on a long bike ride or meet up with friends for a coffee or go out for dinner and drinks.

Do you have any other productive weekend rituals?

Note: Common Good kindly sent me some household goods to try out, but I have bought plenty of their products on my own in the past and I wholeheartedly recommend them. All opinions are my own.
