One of the reasons why I blog is simply to have the space to write: getting things “on paper” helps me to process my feelings and organize my thoughts. I also love having a record of my life over the past few years: a place that holds all of my stories, my photos, the ups and downs of travel. But sometimes, I also just want to remember and share the little things that brought me day-to-day joy. Every Friday, I’ll give you a peek into the book I currently can’t put down, a great restaurant discovery, a fun new product or an inspiring quote: a few things that I think you might enjoy before we all take off into the glory that is the weekend!

Elizabeth Street Sculpture Garden in SoHoHoly moly it’s already August! The last week of July was jam-packed with fun stuff: a day at the beach where I ran into TWO different sets of Brooklyn friends, a super successful ONA x charity: water Instameet, a night of making lavender jam, a fancy date night at Aurora, our monthly girls dinner at Bianca (again–it’s my new favorite restaurant!). And best of all: my best friend from high school and college flew in to New York City last night! I can’t wait to show her my favorite nooks in Brooklyn and cheer on the San Francisco Giants against the Mets.

#Whatliftsyou mural in SoHo, New York City

Looks

The corner of Mott and Kenmare is one of my favorite spots of murals: it used to be this amazing colorful portrait of Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld. I noticed that it had recently been replaced with this butterfly piece, so I had a quick photo shoot with my coworker on Tuesday. Little did we know Taylor Swift had been there just last week!

“I like the real you better than the Instagram you.” Wise words by Morley, spotted in SoHo.

Tacos at Cerveceria Havemeyer in Brooklyn

Eats

The most common complaint of Californians in New York: no good tacos! I still think that the West Coast is the Best Coast when it comes to tacos, but I finally tried out Cerveceria Havemeyer. It serves up all of the things I miss about California: spicy guava margaritas, cheap tacos ($3 each!), outdoor seating and friendly service. Bonus: we went on a Saturday evening with a street fair happening on the next street, so there was plenty of Latin music!

Drinks at Extra Fancy Brooklyn

Drinks

On our very first date, my boyfriend and I went to Extra Fancy: he claimed that it had the best cocktails in New York City. It’s still one of our favorite places to grab a drink, and we sampled their new cocktail menu: high marks for the Roebling Beach, and that adorable watermelon star garnish.

My BFF slash roommate and I now have (almost) matching grown-up friendship bracelets: these gorgeous astrological cuffs from Catbird! #ariesandgeminiforever

Orchid from Whole Foods in SoHo

Blooms

Picked up this vibrant baby orchid for just $5 at Whole Foods on Sunday: isn’t she a beaut?

Reading at Elizabeth Street Garden in SoHo

Reads

It’s been a while since I had a good binge read, but I started and finished Sharp Objects in fewer than 24 hours this weekend! Gillian Flynn has a knack for creating deliciously creepy thrillers, a little creepy but that you just can’t put down. I read Gone Girl in the same fashion last fall–and can’t wait for the movie.

Coffee and avocado toast at Two Hands NYC

New York City

I was so thrilled to see Two Hands featured in this fantastic New York Times article on the explosion of Australian cafes in New York City. I found out the cafe is named after the Heath Ledger movie–a film that my Australian friends insisted that I watch as soon as I moved there. It’s not quite the same as Melbourne, but between Vegemite-avocado toast, those adorable Aussie accents and the gorgeous, light-filled interior: it’s pretty darn close.

Whole Journeys peach lavender jam recipe

Sweet Tooth

This is just a quick reminder to say that I made jam AND that you can win a $50 gift certificate to Whole Foods simply by leaving a comment on yesterday’s post. Go do it!
