Postcard from Newtown

Postcard from Newtown

Taking advantage of cheap flights, I hopped up to Sydney a couple of weekends ago. I spent one gloriously sunny day exploring Newtown: a colorful and slightly off-beat suburb. I wandered through countless bookstores on King Street, searched for street art in alleyways and ate the most delicious African food for lunch. Winning.

I go to Newtown a lot with the boyfriend (it’s close to his house and his favorite coffee shop is there). My favorite places are Guzman y Gomez Mexican, Elizabeth’s Secondhand Books and sitting in Newtown park.ย

  • This area looks lovely. The street art is magnificent, my favorite is the giant Africa painted on the building.

I bought a Bill Bryson book in Elizabeth’s Secondhand Books so that I would have something to read over lunch! Adore Newtown ๐Ÿ™‚

I loved that one too! It was on the side of the African restaurant I ate lunch in!

  • I lived in Newtown! I loved it there ๐Ÿ™‚ย

Where did you eat? Was it African Feeling cafe? That was the one and only place I worked while I was in Sydney (and for 2 whole weeks!).ย

Glad you liked ‘my’ little neighborhood!

  • Never heard of Newton but really love the graffiti and the photos.ย  My wife would really enjoy trying the African food.

So lovely! Had never heard of Newton but it looks like a colorful place.ย

  • Spent my lunch breaks hanging out in Newtown when I was at Sydney Uni many years ago, and a lot of time there over the years, shopping for ‘vintage’ when we still called it ‘second-hand’, seeing bands, eating out, drinking in the pubs, and with my husband Terence shopping for guitars there on weekends. Fond memories. Can’t wait to see how, and if, it’s changed.

Ahhh I love Newtown! It was actually at Kilamanjaro on King Street! Have you been there? It was delicious! Bet you’re looking forward to heading back to Sydney and Newtown soon ๐Ÿ™‚

Glad to help conjure up some memories! Newtown definitely would have been my suburb of choice as a student–such an eclectic mix, but lots of fun.
