Postcard from Great Ocean Road

April 28, 2011 in Australia,Places,Postcards,Victoria

The Great Ocean Road is often billed as the most scenic drive in the world–and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. The route winds alongside crushing waves, white sand beaches and quaint seaside towns with jaunts through dense, greener-than-green rainforest and rolling hillsides dotted with cows and crops.Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia at duskI had a brief foray into driving on the left side of the road, but quickly decided that my real talent lie in choosing the radio station, picking out our next cafe stop and mastering through-the-sunroof shots.

A brief detour from the seaside leads you right into the rainforest.

  • Thanks for the photos but were exactly is the Great Ocean Road located? Really like the shot of the rainforest.

  • These pictures are beautiful! I love scenic roads unless I am the one driving :)

  • I love the GOR. My fav. accommodation in the whole wide world is there, but I have to keep it a secret because it’s almost always booked out as it is! Such a beautiful piece of Australia — I love camping in the Otways.

  • Stunning! Would love to do a roadtrip here!

  • Amy

Beautiful photos! Love the through the sunroof style! 😉

  • We did love the GOR but I have to say that my favorite drive is the Road to Hana. Love that!

  • As always, what an inspiring post! Seems like heaven on Earth for a Montrealer like me. It’s been a late, late spring here.

Hope you enjoyed your day! :)

  • Such a great drive! Please tell me you stopped and saw the koalas??

  • What beautiful and colorful shots! These are great!

Great Ocean Road is located in coastal Victoria, in between Melbourne and Adelaide. It’s the perfect daytrip or weekend getaway from Melbourne!

I lucked out since I wasn’t old enough to be on the rental car contract and because I’m not awesome at driving on the left–I tried it out for one short spurt, but other than that, I stayed in the passenger seat!

Oooohhh…maybe you can send it in an email?! Now I’m curious! Camping in the Otways would be absolutely gorgeous–maybe I’ll try that next trip!

It’s absolutely gorgeous! Can’t miss it if you make it to Melbourne!

It gave me something to do other than just search for radio stations–lots of fun!

Been to Maui many times, but haven’t done the road to Hana yet–my family isn’t too big on road trips! Will have to convince them it’s worth it on our next trip :)

It’s going into winter here, so don’t get too jealous! We definitely lucked out on some gorgeous weather though!

We didn’t! And there weren’t any kangaroos on the Anglesea golf course–quite disappointing, actually!

  • Anonymous

Thank you! It was a lot of fun taking them :)

  • Ohh Great Ocean Road, I’m jealous! I’ve taken lots of road trips in Australia but I’ve shockingly only been down to Victoria once…definitely something I plan to rectify!

  • The Great Ocean Road is on my Australia wish list, just after I finish with the NZ wish list and get my NZ passport… 😉

If you haven’t done Great Ocean Road yet, you must do it soon! It’s absolutely gorgeous and has so many fun places to stop–perfect road trip material!

Fair enough–there’s plenty to keep you busy in both countries!
