Video Postcard from Sydney Mardi Gras

I usually celebrate Mardi Gras with mass amounts of homemade crepes: Fat Tuesday is traditionally the last day to use up all your fat and sugar before Lent. The religious overtones of this day of feasting were cast aside at Sydney Mardi Gras 2011: it celebrates the gay and lesbian community with a flashy parade and copious partying.

The parade was one giant party in itself: complete with half-naked cheerleaders, men in leather chaps and very attractive lifesavers in Speedos. The theme this year was Say Something–and, not surprisingly, many organizations chose to focus on the issue of gay marriage (it is not yet legal in Australia). My favorite part was seeing the gay policeman, fireman and defense troops get roaring cheers from the crowd: it’s awesome to see that kind of support. Watch the video to get a taste of what the parade was all about:

Have you ever celebrated Mardi Gras in Sydney or Carnival in another part of the world? What was your experience?
