Challenge of the Cornet: Paris Edition

Challenge of the Cornet: Paris Edition

True, the Challenge of the Cornet is centered around trying all 93 flavors at Fennochio in Nice (only 76 left to go!). However, I didn’t see why my ice cream obsession should be limited to the French Riviera when Paris is foodie heaven. I took the advice of Rosa Jackson (Paris food expert), David Lebovitz (Paris-based pastry chef) and my host mom (real-life French person) and hit up the top ice cream shops in Paris.

Grom: OK, so it’s not French or even Parisian, but this famed Italian gelato shop has become a top dessert destination in the Sixth Arrondissement in the two years since it opened a Paris location. The Torino-based company is known for using all-natural ingredients, and is hailed as one of the best gelateries in Italia by David Lebovitz.

Pamplemousse rose/Pink Grapefruit: Holy moly, refreshing. Just enough bitter grapefruit flavor, but sweet enough to enjoy on its own.
Melone/Melon: Very light but an intense melon flavor. Perfect for hot summer nights.
Fiordlatte menthe/ Whole Milk with Mint : Creamy and rich milk base but with a hint of mint. A lovely accompaniment for a fruit sorbet.

Pozzetto: I’d noticed this tiny gelaterie during my previous stays in le Marais, but hadn’t tried it (my obsession with ice cream wanes a bit in cold Paris winters). Now I’m kicking myself for not tasting it sooner–this is the kind of gelato that is delicious in any weather. Tip: it costs extra to sit inside, so order from the outdoor window and enjoy while wandering through le Marais.
Pistache/ Pistachio: Hands-down the best pistachio I’ve ever tasted. The texture is phenomenal and the flavor is perfect–not overly nutty, but still very true.
Fiordlatte/ Whole Milk: One of those perfect accompaniment flavors that is also very strong on it’s own. Creamy and delicious, without being overly sweet or intense. Very soft and nice for a balmy summer afternoon.

Berthillon: Honestly, I was underwhelmed. The cherry and coconut flavors were good, but nothing spectacular. I think this sums up a lot about French cuisine: the old-school favorites are reliably good. However, many are lacking in originality, in creating something that genuinely excites people. Berthillon will continue to draw the crowds because of its tradition, reputation and location but I’d rather spend my hard-earned Euros on something a bit more fun.

What are your favorite Paris ice cream shops? If I missed one, I’d love to try it on my next trip!
